As told by Valdete Idrizi, founder of Community Building Mitrovica, embellished by Donald Reeves.
Once upon a time, not so long ago, a 16 year old shepherd was guarding his sheep outside his village in Kosovo. It was a warm September evening, and the shepherd was looking forward to seeing his 3 brothers again who were coming home for his birthday. He was wondering what presents he was going to get.
In the distance he saw a ball of dust coming towards him. It turned out to be a gleaming white 4 by 4. It stopped. Music blaring. The driver was wearing a wide brimmed hat and dark sun glasses. He had a red face. Some sort of international official ,the shepherd thought. He looked as if he had had a good lunch.
“Here boy,” said the official, and whistled to him.
“If I guess how many sheep you have will you give me one?”
“Yes”, said the shepherd.
The official climbs back into the driving seat.
He opens his laptop. After a moment he says “you have 125 sheep.”
‘That’s right” says the shepherd, and hands over his dog.
As the official prepares to leave, the shepherd says:-
“Wait. If I guess who you are, will you give me back my sheep?”‘
“Yes” says the official.
The shepherd looks at him directly;-
“You are an expert.”
The official looks very proud. “How did you guess?” He asked.
“‘Well, first you entered my village without being invited.
Secondly, you are telling me things I already know.
And thirdly you cannot see the difference between a dog and a sheep.”
